A 1980s Waterfront Home Reimagined
Timeless Elegance Meets Waterfront Living
This project involves the ambitious transformation of a spacious but characteristic 1980s waterfront home in Runaway Bay into a timeless French Provincial residence. Working closely with the clients, Burleigh Beach Designs developed a scheme to overcome the limitations of the existing structure and unlock the potential of its unique wedge-shaped block and water views.
Design Response: Facade, Flow & Detail
The existing facade, dominated by a large three-car garage typical of the era, lacked a clear sense of entry. Our design introduces a prominent, classically detailed double-storey portico as a central welcoming feature, significantly enhancing curb appeal and establishing the French Provincial aesthetic. This is complemented by a new upper-level balcony and carefully selected architectural mouldings for an authentic, polished finish. A linear pathway creates a symmetrical approach, while a discrete home office entry maintains residential privacy.
A reconfigured foyer with an intimate ceiling height offers privacy before opening dramatically into the double-height foyer and stairwell – a deliberate contrast enhancing the sense of volume and grandeur.
Internally, the design orchestrates a journey. This sequence guides occupants towards the heart of the home: the redesigned kitchen, dining, and living areas, now featuring sophisticated finishes like Carrara marble.
Addressing existing spatial inefficiencies, the master bedroom and ensuite were redesigned as harmonious, functional retreats reflecting the home's elegant style. Responding to the Gold Coast lifestyle, the design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor living. A new covered entertaining area, detailed with ornate columns and traditional mouldings, attaches to the rear, connecting the kitchen, dining, and butler's pantry to the pool and canal views while providing shelter from the elements.
